Football, soccer… You say potato, I say batata. What matters is that the (men’s) World Cup is here. And I am VERY excited. More than usual. It’s the first time in my adult years that I get to be in Brazil and watch the games truly at home.
Living abroad is amazing yadda yadda yadda. Now, watching the World Cup abroad is nothin’ but a reminder that America and Brazil have some irreconcilable differences. It’s not my terrible myopia, there really are ZERO FLAGS and signs leading to the games. It’s all rows of wrapped turkey corpses. The only score being kept in the news is 2 x 1, Biden doubling on the number of Turkeys pardoned vs Trump’s 1.
It’s no coincidence that Gisele and Tom filed for divorce this month.
After surviving the match ***he whose score shall never be named*** in London in 2014 and watching ‘18 games being narrated in Hebrew in empty hookah bars in Jerusalem, I will get my final vindication.
I have to dress the part.
Bella Hadid Adidas x Balenciaga makes it look so effortless to wear mega oversized jerseys, but don’t get fooled. My personal experiment just made me look like Snow White’s 8th Brazilian-cheering dwarf. (PS, why every given Vogue has more Bellas than smiles I don’t know).
So I decided to take a Bear Grylls approach, or better, a Primavera de 83. She was my first embroidery teacher and is just the coolest, nicest person.
Here’s the vibe, and mood I am going for, very handmade.
I will for sure work around my own closet, buying nothing new. Here are the victims I am considering:
My first instinct was to work with the official jersey but my brother almost stabbed me with a chopstick over dinner, so triggered by the idea of “destroying” an official item that could be considered vintage eventually.
Between blue shirt X Ronaldinho, I decide to work with Ronaldinho because it would be more of a project, covering stains and bringing the unwearable back to life.
I start drawing a heart and stenciling it to the T-Shirt, right on top of a bleach stain, trying to diverge focus from it.
The next step is choosing the color of the thread and getting to it. I end up with green… because..well.. VAI BRASIL.
Even though it did cover the stains, we felt it was still a little unbalanced, so this morning I added a Caju (Cashew Fruit) on the other side.
Here’s the final result, before ironing. Super cute for Brazil’s 1st match, which, unlike Gisele, I will still be watching (with my hubby) in LA.
What did you think? Ideas on what I should work on next?
I really love seeing your process. You provide an interesting approach to creativity that I could really use right now. Struggling myself with a story for a kids book... that keeps changing and never goes anywhere.... I appreciate this story boarding idea... grabbing images to draw inspiration from. Not only a key hole into your creative process but opens up a some neural pathways for my creative block... I got the fruit... so brazil.... As for the heart... I saw you the heart in your idea board that inspired you. The fact that you chose this heart over the little love heart was very telling.... it adds the adrenaline driving accelerated heartbeat aspect of watching an emotional rich competition... so it was a good choice. Great post! Keep em coming please!
